PREMIERE: Out of Christchurch comes the haunting romance of Laura Lee Lovely

laura lee lovely

Formerly of shoegaze band O’Lovely, Christchurch’s Laura Lee Lovely is a couple of singles deep into a very promising solo project. Combining the spacey synth landscapes of her musical beginnings with a lyricism reflecting her transition into a new musical terrain. Lovely is now on a path all of her own.

Her latest single Hot Blood embodies this completely. With soft, swirling undertones and yearning vocals, the single is mysterious and intriguing. It’s most definitely drawing from her synth pop background, but with a daring and eclectic mix of samples and a raw recording style Hot Blood is far from being generic.

Clearly a project of passion and with a distinct vision, Lovely has managed to marry her keen attention to detail with organic and natural production to create something which is very much her own.

The track is expressive and freeing, capturing that moment of creative release in Lovely’s latest solo endeavours. Recorded and produced alongside multi-instrumentalist Simon Brouwer in Christchurch, Hot Blood captures an essence of innocence and wonder.

What really stands out to a listener is the percussion. Experimenting with a number of different instruments on this single, Lovely and Brouwer have paid particular attention to synthesised drums, firmly grasp upon a pulsating and captivating beat that runs throughout the track. Subtle but not lost, it is these intricacies within Hot Blood that cause the listener to loose themselves in the physical responses they catalyse.

With more music up her sleeve and Hot Blood being the first single off of an upcoming EP, Laura Lee Lovely is extending herself into new territory and if this track is anything to go off of, this record should be outstanding.
