Crooked Colours

Picture yourself whizzing along on a futuristic luminescent blue light cycle like the guys from Tron, while Crooked Colours’ dark electronica plays in the background. That’s what I imagine when I listen to them anyway. It’s hard not to become an instant fan after hearing the aggressive synths and heavily distorted vocals that have become the sound synonymous with Crooked Colours.

Having just wrapped up a supporting gig for RüFüS on their sold out Australian tour, the Perth based trio have recently been announced as the triple j Unearthed winners for the opening spot on Perth’s 2014 Laneway Festival lineup. Awesome!

2013 saw a few releases from these guys, including the seductive and alluring Moontan Nocturnal, which nicely juxtaposes Come Down, an eerie, delicate progressive track. Moontan Nocturnal is part Daft Punk, part Gesaffelstein, sprinkled with a dash of The Presets. It’s a dancefloor tune with a dark edge, featuring shadowy vocals drifting amidst heavy synths and percussion.

Although it’s still a characteristic Crooked Colours track, latest single Come Down explores a different minimalistic sensibility. Come Down opens with Phil Slabber’s gentle vocals complemented by unconventional instrumentals, moving to a soothing guitar progression and thumping Nicolas Jaar-like drum beat. The track culminates in a stream of glitchy synths and electronic percussion, unifying the raw, fragile vocals and pounding electronica in a cohesive manner. Both singles are intriguing teasers of Crooked Colours’ sophomore EP due early 2014.

With the forthcoming EP only a couple short months away, I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s excited for what is to come from Crooked Colours.
