When a song makes your head bop in the first ten seconds, you know you’re in for a good time. The opening lick of Carvel’s latest jam Colour Me In had me doing just that. It’s straight-up tasty.
Colour Me In serves as the band’s first release since their 2015 debut For The Birds EP, so it’s been a fairly long time between drinks. That said, Carvel certainly kept up their craft in the downtime.
Armed by one of the catchiest opening sequences to any song in 2018, Carvel’s Colour Me In is a jam you won’t forget in a hurry.
The Queensland four-piece took their act to the studio after garnering international attention from their Youtube channel, where they would post covers of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Simone & Garfunkel, Radiohead and the like.
In case you needed proof that they’re the real deal, here’s a video of Carvel jamming with Flea. Yeah.
The new track blends wavey guitar washes and a ridiculously tight rhythm section with the aforementioned catchiness of the lead. The Chilis (especially John Frusciante) influence beams through in that clean riff at the front of the mix, forcing your attention like only the best melodies can.
Speaking of Colour Me In, lead singer Timothy Tanzer shared the following:
“The song for me, lyrically, came to be about reinvention. I’ve always been a very closed person, someone who bottles my feelings and has difficulty making close connections.”
“Colour Me In is about the feeling you have where you feel like you have left the old you and everything you didn’t like about yourself behind… and the happiness that comes with finally feeling comfortable with who you are…”
The track also marks the first single from Carvel’s upcoming self-titled EP, which is due out on April 27th. Stay tuned!
