Music, love and Australia. Here’s why we couldn’t be more excited to experience Jen Cloher’s self-titled album

Aussie singer-songwriter, ARIA nominated artist and queen of grunge Jen Cloher is returning with a brand new, self-titled album.

The live recorded album is an ode to love, to music and to Australia. Intimate without the preciousness, the album was recorded in October 2016 in a room with minimal overdubs.

Cloher’s strong political voice, activism towards artist rights and outspoken personality resonate instinctively with her sound, diversifying between acoustic, rock and a touch of country twang.

Featuring Courtney Barnett as lead guitarist as well as drummer Jen Sholakis and bassist Bones Sloane, the album was recorded in Jumbunna, Victoria by Greg Walker.

It wasn’t until March 2017 in Jeff Tweedy’s famous Loft Studio that the record was finally completed, and the release of one track already beams with a Velvet Underground likeness.

With lyrics so honest and raw, this power queen lives up to her name completely in Forgot Myself. Keeping it completely and utterly real, the guitar-driven track takes on more of a grunge-rock feel in comparison to Cloher’s previous work.

The vocals “Oh God, I forgot myself. Oh, God I forgot my health,” instinctively tie the riffs and percussion together, growing heavier in both volume and emotion as the song progresses.

Cloher is certainly a sister that has been doing it for herself, co-founding her own label Milk! Records alongside Barnett.

Cloher’s self-titled album is due to be released August 11. She’s also on tour, beginning August 24 at The Foundry, Fortitude Valley.
