Who cares about a little rain? Get out and see these 7 gigs this weekend

I’m pretty sure the entire country has been suffering from some pretty horrible weather this week (expect Perth, you lucky bastards). You know what is the best cure for that damp, cooped up feeling? Getting out and seeing some gigs. This week is a cracker. We found it pretty hard to narrow it down (this is going to keep getting harder and harder as it gets hotter and hotter) but here are our top 7 gig picks pulled from our gig guide to help you get over your growing claustrophobia. And remember, if you’re a muso and want to be in the Gig Guide all you have to do is register with Songkick.

Papa Pilko gigs

Screw the shitty weather, nobody likes hanging indoors on the weekend. These 7 gigs will provide the perfect rainy week anxiety release.

Drunk Mums – Jimmy’s Den, Perth, Friday 6th November

Soak up that sweet, sweet sunshine Perth, cos we’re suffering over this way. While you’re at it you should probably go and see Drunk Mums too. The pub rock heroes are in the middle of a massive Aussie tour supporting their new record Gone Troppo, hitting up all the big cities and some regionals. Catch them in Perth this weekend with The Sperts, Bikini Cops.

The Ocean Party – The Bird, Perth, Friday 6th November

If garage rock isn’t your thing you should slide on over to The Bird to watch The Ocean Party launch their forthcoming record Light Weight. The Spunk Records alumni are a prolific bunch; Light Weight is their fifth record in five years – a tidy little collection of catchy guitar pop. They are supported by Methyl Ethel which is a pretty huge deal too.

You Am I – The Gov, Adelaide, Friday 6th November

You Am I are Aussie rock legends, and like all rock legends, they just keep on truckin’. Tim Rogers and co have just put out their tenth record Porridge and Hotsauce and are taking it on a massive trip around Australia. This week they are taking on The Gov in Adelaide alongside The Delta Riggs. They are playing a lot of regional shows so if you’re anywhere in Australia, they are probably playing near you. Seriously.

The Lulu Raes – Newtown Social Club, Sydney, Friday 6th November

A few weeks back we asked The Lulu Raes to take us on a virtual date to their favourite spots in Sydney, accompanied by the perfect track for each location. One of the best places to be hanging in Sydney this Friday will be the Newtown Social Club – and The Lulu Raes themselves will be supplying the soundtrack (alongside Letters to Lions and Majun Bu).

Papa Pilko & The Binrats – The Workers Club, Melbourne, Saturday 7th November

Another crazy hard working band is Papa Pilko & The Binrats. These guys have been flat out touring their brilliant new record Till The End of The Road, which we had the pleasure of premiering, playing a huge amount of shows all around the country. They hit Melbourne this week, playing The Workers Club, who’s wooden interiors are a match made in heaven for their foot-stomping, whiskey-soaked live show.

Shining Bird – The Shadow Electric, Melbourne, Saturday 7th November

Shining Bird have re-emerged from their Thirroul nests since releasing their incredibly expansive debut, appropriately titled Leisure Coast, with the equally beautiful Rivermouth. They are launching the single across the country, kicking off this weekend in Melbourne before heading up to Sydney and Wollongong. They were also recently announced on the Fairgrounds Festival bill which is going to be a blast.

Newtown Festival – Camperdown Park, Sydney Sunday 8th November

If you’ve got an energy left by Sunday you should absolutely hit up Newtown Festival. It’s pretty much the best day of year, and weather permitting, 2015 is going to be corker. Playing across the day will be The Laurels, Jinja Safari, The Cops, The Walking Who and Le Pie amongst many others. Make sure you get there early for the dog show.
