Weirdoh! remixes Hollow States’ If I Have To Grow Up

You know Hollow States right? The band whose songs could’ve ruled Happy’s saddest songs list (but we could only pick one due to the need to not show any bias) and whose music can be summarised as: “The rarity of Sydney’s alternative-pop trio, Hollow States’ introspective and moody nature will consume the vulnerable in an inescapable emotional affair.”

Well if you’ve been paying attention this week, a Sydney producer transformed this melancholy tragedy (no, no, no, not the song, but the emotions within) and made it into a wicked dance remix. It’s amazing how people interpret the same thing in different ways, and how you can literally turn a frown upside down – don’t underestimate those clichéd expressions.

Introducing Sydney producer, Weirdoh, as they remix Hollow States’ melancholy track to unlock its contrasting emotional potential as a dance hit.

Weirdoh! or Weirdoh (sorry, SEOs and URLs aren’t a fan of the exclamation mark) is a man of simple photos and simple words. Descriptions like: “I like weird shit, and I also make the phat beats yo” reveals that either they’re a big troll or they’re pretty cool and know how to speak the language of the people – I’m a believer in all things positive so let’s go with the latter. I’m pretty sure we’ve just caught them too early in the game, so don’t judge an artist by how many likes or photos they have because the best is yet to come, proven by the few tracks they’ve already released.

Weirdoh! jazzes up If I Have To Grow Up by filtering the vocals in a way to capture its sensual essence, and adds airy metallic chimes, the electric shuttering of beats, and the classic slapping of beats that erratically speed up before the beat drops. The remix takes the sequence in the chorus originally driven by piano, and elevates the melody with assured and lively beats – now a standout feature of the song. The vibraphone-like sample also adds a more sprightly undertone in the mix. Weirdoh maintains the integrity and sombreness of the track, but adds to the inner conflict – clouding and clearing your sense of judgement simultaneously.

Also check out Weirdoh’s original remix Waves – it’s chill and fresh with a sense of alarm to keep things interesting and dramatic. You can get your free download of the If I Have To Grow Up remix on Soundcloud.
