Watch the first trailer for upcoming Robert Mapplethorpe biopic, featuring Patti Smith

Next March, a new biopic following the life of iconic photographer Robert Mapplethorpe is set to hit theatres. Now, the first trailer for the upcoming film has been unveiled.

Starring Matt Smith as Mapplethorpe and Marianne Rendón as Patti Smith, the new film will follow “Mapplethorpe’s life from moments before he and Patti Smith moved into the famed Chelsea Hotel, home to a world of bohemian chic,” says a press release.

The first trailer for the upcoming Robert Mapplethorpe biopic has arrived, and it features some familiar faces. We’re pretty keen for this one.

Simply titled Mapplethorpe, the new biopic was directed by Ondi Timoner. Throughout his legendary career, Mapplethorpe has shot portraits of such names as Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Laurie Anderson, and Patti Smith.

Mapplethorpe’s work displayed eroticism in a way that had never been examined nor displayed before to the public. The film explores the intersection of his art and his sexuality along with his struggle for mainstream recognition,” the press release says.

Mapplethorpe is known for his controversial subject matter, including nude celebrity portraits and documentation of the BDSM sub-culture in New York during the late sixties and early seventies.

Mapplethorpe is set to hit theatres on March 1st, 2019. For now, do yourself a favour and watch the new trailer above.
