There’s something peacefully magical about this electronic duo hailing from Sydney’s inner west ( where Happy HQ is located!). Left.‘s soulful petiteness effortlessly illuminates backdrops of starry night skies – with jazzy and sultry vocals and clean and superior production, what seems like uncluttered soundscapes in riddled with intricate spacey samples. You can’t help but be mesmerised .
Sydney’s Left. and their latest track Freedom continues to showcase their dreamy and space-like electronica. A highly anticipated debut LP coming in 2015.
Left. is a collaborative electronic project between vocalist Sarah Corry and guitarist Jono Graham (Made in Japan). With influences from Seekae, Gold Panda, Parades, Little Dragon, and SBTRKT, Left. creates a sound that is founded on samples and synths, with pop music quality written all over it.
The notion of ‘space’ is used in many senses of the word in Left.’s sound – suspense built up and drawn out by 808 beats, space-like themes brought about by otherworldly samples, instrumentally there are various foreign elements that appear and disappear through time and space, with their presence appreciated for elevating the moment.
This music video for Freedom (directed by Dean Lever, produced by Dean Lever & Adit Gauchan and Lighting/Co-Production by Cole Bennetts) allows you to visually understand what it’s like to experience Left.. With a sense of thrill only apparent to you at night, this video situates you in an environment that allows for your sense of hearing to be heightened – it may be cold and bleak, but aurally you will be content. With projectors posting up childhood memories up against the trees, you can’t help but want to steal this DIY idea for yourself. Symbolically, this alludes to Left.’s organic nature and their ability to leave a lasting impression on something that is immoveable by breaking through its tough exterior.
Endearing warmth trails Left. wherever their music takes you – like seriously, as I travel back in time on their Soundcloud I can’t decide which is my favourite – Nessun Dorma, Slow Knife, Poison Vine…I love them all! Fans of Airling, Montgomery, Eves, Lupa J, Happy newcomer Folly Rae and other electronic folk singers will need Left. in their life. It’s always a pleasure to discover someone new in this genre and realise that they are unique in what they have to offer – proof that musical creation is infinite if you dare to be different within the barriers that define a genre.
Keep an eye out for Left.’s debut album Sirens set to be released February 6th 2015 via Create/Control.
