Velvet Cave is Sydney’s premier celebration of all things underground, modulated and reverberated. Taking place at the recently refurbished club 77 in Kings Cross, Velvet Cave is showcasing a variety of West Coast psychedelic sounds à la The Doors, Wooden Shjips and Grateful Dead. That’s the West Coast of the US, so we’re talking San Francisco here, not Perth.
Tonight, the 28th of February, come down and see Happy faves The Grease Arrestor from right here in Sydney, Dreamtime from Brizzy and The Babe Rainbow from Rainbow Bay taking out the headline spot. Summer might now be over (especially here in Sydney), but this combination of organic, coastal psychedelic sounds are sure to bring some sunshine vibes back into your blood.
We reviewed The Grease Arrestor‘s awesome debut a few weeks ago – describing it as a summary of everything the current Sydney psychedelic guitar scene stands for, mixing jangle, kraut, Americana, drone and 60’s garage into a single, homogenous entity. If you haven’t already, check out their bandcamp and take a geez at one of the best albums released this side of 2014. Dreamtime are a bunch of QT’s whose album Sun is equally worthy of a good hard listen, but we understand that you don’t want to get too stoned before you go out tonight. We’ll forgive you if you wanna save it for the gig.
Babe Rainbow also got a writeup late last year, we gave them and their awesome video a whole lotta love, praising the way that their kaleidoscopic tunes loop perfectly with the incredible visuals on film. Definitely a band worthy of the headline spot for Sydney’s favourite psychedelic party.
1:30 lockouts are in place throughout the CBD starting from this evening, but that shouldn’t really matter. There’s $5 beers all night (these sometimes run out in the fridge and you’ll have to put up with a slightly warmer tinnie than you’d like) and you can smoke ciggies in the little smoking room near the bathrooms – no need to go outside and accidentally get locked out. Speaking of bathrooms, keep in mind that the dudes toilet is on the right and the ladies on the left – there’s still no signage for this at 77s and in a room full of psych fans who look like Noel Fielding it’s sometimes hard to distinguish the genders of those around you. Grease Arrestor are on at 10, Dreamtime at 11 and Babe Rainbow starts on the stroke of midnight.
