Anyone who knows me know that my love for buses is enormous. I love sitting down, switching off and people watching my way to my destination. And now Sydney has pulled through in a big way, with trials for on-demand buses for commuters set to kick off in October.
Uber for public transport? Sydney is set to trial on-demand buses for commuters this October.
From what we can gather, the idea is that you would have an app and in a similar fashion to Uber you are able to book a seat on a shuttle bus which would then transport you to your preferred destination.
Andrew Constance, the Minister for Transport has spoken about the new service, “We’ve got on-demand movies, we’ve got on-demand food, well, you can order an on-demand bus now.”
“We’re trying to use every means available to try to ease the pressure on our commuter car parks, on our roads… if you’ve got eight people in a mini bus that’s far more effective than having eight cars on the road.”
The buses will be trialled from as early as October this year and will operate across Manly and the Eastern Suburbs, Sutherland Shire, Wetherill Park, Greystanes, Edmondson Park, Macquarie Park, and the Northern Beaches. Then stretching as far as Bankstown and the Central Coast.
As noted by the ABC, this kind of service has been successfully trialled in the US and in London.
The trial in Australia is expected to run for six months.
