Too much booze brewed our Aussie accent

The Opera House. Kangaroos. Crocodile Dundee. We’ve always had some pretty distinct icons to proudly call Australian. The Aussie accent has long been one them. But now an academic from the Victoria University claims our beloved Australian drawl comes from settlers getting shit-faced.

Aussie Accent beer

Dean Frenkel, a tutor at the Melbourne based university, says it was our forefather’s love of hooch that created the Aussie accent. “The Australian alphabet cocktail was spiked by alcohol. Our forefathers regularly got drunk together and through their frequent interactions unknowingly added an alcoholic slur to our national speech patterns” Mr Frenkel said.

For the past two centuries, from generation to generation, drunken Aussie-speak continues to be taught by sober parents to children. Since this finding Mr Frenkel says rhetoric lessons need to be included in school curriculums to get rid of our lazy consonants and misused vowels.
