Tin Pan Alley @ Vivid Festival

This week’s Happy pick for Sydney’s Vivid festivities comes to us from a basement in Sydney’s Spanish quarter, the now iconic Sydney music venue Goodgod Small Club and Danceteria presenting an amazing local and international four artist lineup.

Named for the string of record publishing companies in turn of the century New York that basically invented the industrialised music industry as we see it today, Tin Pan Alley brings Penny Penny to Australian shores for the first time ever.

A mix of incredible artists share the Opera House stage tonight (30th May) for Tin Pan Alley, presented by Sydney’s Goodgod Small Club and Danceteria.

For those not familiar, Penny Penny is a South African artist whom in 1994 released and recorded Shaka Bundu, a work that came to define Tsonga Afro-Disco. Last year, L.A. based label/collective/tastemakers Awesome Tapes From Africa released the album in full in the United States, uncovering the secret of Penny Penny’s visionary tunes.

Supporting the 52 year old South African pop legend is Bart Willoughby, who has worked with Yothu Yindi and the indigenous/reggae fusion groups No Fixed Address and Mixed Relations. The artist was the first Aboriginal artist to appear in and write lyrics for a docu-drama, the first to score a a feature film and the first to sign a record deal. Tin Pan Alley will be his debut performance el solo.

Also in support will be Shogun (formerly of Royal Headache) and Melbourne’s all singin, all dancin, all lovin answer to Ariel Pink, Montero. Oh, and what Goodgod event would be complete without the unique synthesised tunes of Donny Benet?

Tin Pan Alley kicks off TONIGHT (30th May) at 7:30pm, so grab yourself some tickets right bloody now at the Vivid website.
