These vegan cookbooks inspired by Nick Cave and Morrissey will make you sad and hungry at the same time

Food, music and sadness go hand in hand. Don’t try denying that your standard breakup routine revolves around eating food and listening to sad music, because we know it does.

Artist Automne Zinng makes no effort in hiding this fact. Actually, food and music are her creative muses, something that has culminated in a series of excellent cookbooks, Defensive Eating with Morrissey and Comfort Eating with Nick Cave, both of which pair drawings of each artist with recipes that play around with the lyrics of each artists.

If you’re going through a breakup right now, these vegan cookbooks inspired by Nick Cave and Morrissey are pretty much everything you need.

Zinng is an illustrator and surrealist photographer. She attracted some attention a few years back with a series of drawings called Goths Eating Things, which are pretty awesome in their own right, which eventually birthed the idea of the two cookbooks.

Cave and Morrissey weren’t involved in the making of the books, although Morrissey was super close. “Morrissey was nearly involved,” said Zinng’s publisher, Microcosm Publishing. “His manager really liked the book and pushed and pushed him but he’s kind of…humorless. We even offered to give money to his favorite charity. He eventually just stopped engaging. Unbeknown to us, Nick Cave’s son had just died when we got in touch so his manager said that he could not be involved.”

The recipes were put together by Joshua Ploeg – The Touring Vegan Chef – and are all vegan. Check them out below, and if you’re feelin’ blue, get cooking with your mates Cave and Morrissey.
