These comic artists are paying tribute to classic 90s album covers from Sonic Youth, Weezer and Nirvana

Royal City is a comic book series by Jeff Lemire from Image Comics about “a family from the small factory town of Royal City and the ghosts that haunt them.”

So far, the cover for each issue has been in the same style as the comics themselves – stark watercolours featuring the central characters of the narrative, the Pikes. However, the next few issues of the series are set to pay tribute to iconic albums from the 90s.

According to Pitchfork, the sixth issue will feature a tribute to Sonic Youth’s Goo by artist Jeffery Brown; the seventh will pay homage to Weezer’s Blue Album by Emi Lenox; and the eighth will be a reimagining of Hole’s Live Through This by Nate Powell.

Following that, more musicians will feature on the covers of future issues of the series, including Portishead, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana.

As Pitchfork note, the second arc of Royal City will follow the covers and jump “back to the year 1993.”
