These are the best album covers of 2017, according to the prestigious Art Vinyl awards

2017 saw stacks and stacks of excellent new music released in the world. We named our favourite songs of the year a few weeks ago, but this is truly just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the global scale of new releases.

But every record needs packaging, and last year saw some amazing album covers accompanying new releases. Last night in London, the Art Vinyl awards celebrated the designers behind these artworks.

The winners and runners up of the 2017 art vinyl awards have been announced, with Timothy Saccenti, Nick Gazin and Troy Hahn sharing first place for the cover for Run The Jewels 3.

Entires for the Art Vinyl awards opened back in November and saw 50 albums shortlisted, including releases from Queens of the Stone Age, Run The Jewels, Bonobo, Father John Misty, Mount Kimbie, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

Past winners include The Last Shadow Puppets’ Everything You’ve Come to Expect, Klaxons’ Surfing the Void, Thom Yorke’s The Eraser, and Fleet Foxes’ eponymous debut LP.

The winners for 2017 were Timothy Saccenti, Nick Gazin and Troy Hahn for their art direction, photography, illustration and layout respectively for Run The Jewels 3. Sasha Barr and Ed Steed won second place for Father John Misty’s Pure Comedy, while Split came in third for the artwork for The Great Distraction by UK band Vessels.
