2019 marks 40 years since The Cure formed as a band, and it’s looking like they’ll have a couple of surprises up their sleeve to celebrate.
Robert Smith has confirmed that The Cure will be heading into the studio to record new music for the band’s 40th anniversary.
In June, Robert Smith will be curating Meltdown Festival, which The Cure are set to headline alongside Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, Death Cab For Cutie, Mogwai and more.
Smith has also revealed in a rare interview that the band have booked studio time next month to demo new songs, as reported by Pitchfork.
“I’ve suddenly fallen in love with the idea of writing new songs,” Smith said speaking with BBC 6 Music. Apparently curating Meltdown was the catalyst for the sudden creative burst (the band’s last recording was a cover of The Beatles’ Hello Goodbye for a Paul McCartney tribute album back in 2014).
Smith talked about how else the band were planning to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
“What shall we do? Go back to Crawley, where it all started? Play in the pub where we did our first show as the Cure? Or should we go mega, play a show in every capital city in the world?”
He continued, “It’s the 40th anniversary of the first album in 2019. I thought, if I don’t have something out new that year, that’s it for me. I don’t think the Cure will ever release another album.”
Following Meltdown Festival, The Cure will play a concert at Hyde Park in London featuring Interpol, Slowdive, Ride, Goldfrapp, Editors and more to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
They also recently announced they will be releasing two albums for Record Store Day 2018: a deluxe vinyl reissue of their 1990 remix album Mixed Up, and a new 16-track collection called Torn Down (Mixed Up Extras).
