The motorised picnic table is here, proves Aussies are geniuses

There have been many great inventions to come from Australia. The Hills Hoist, the lawnmower, cask wine and the speedo are some of the brilliant things our clever brethren have created in the past for the betterment of humanity, and now we can add one more item to that list. Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls of all ages, we present the motorised picnic table.

A few mates have been caught cruising the streets of Perth on their motorised picnic tables. Geniuses or maniacs? We vote the former.

Everyone loves a good picnic. A couple of sangas on the barbie, a spot of cricket and a few cold ones. Well these Perth legends have taken picnics to the next level with their mobile picnic tables, and they took them for a quick test drive around the city too. Because, Straya.

Footage of the nine men riding the tables down Scarborough Road has gone viral, though their ingenious addition to the outdoor culinary experience has drawn some scrutinising attention from the police.

In a statement Western Australia Police said “Police are concerned for the safety of those riding on the tables with no protective clothing, especially when on roads alongside motor vehicles. There are overall safety concerns particularly if a traffic incident was to occur, resulting in the persons subjecting themselves to potential injury.”

“The people using these vehicles could face a number of charges including driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and drink driving“.

It seems the coppers are the only one’s not impressed with this landmark innovation, with several citizens expressing some rightfully earned praise for the tables.

Before we pass judgement let’s just appreciate the beauty of such a device. Imagine having a picnic and Mother Nature flips you the bird courtesy of a mid-arvo shower. You could pack up and go home, or you could just drive your picnic to some shelter.

This of course isn’t the first time Aussies have faced strife due to riding something that isn’t legally a vehicle. Another Perth man rode a motorised esky down the street last year while two other men did the same thing in Victoria and South Australia respectively. Meanwhile a Tassie man has taken his case to ride his esky in public to court.
