The Hunting Birds run us through their red-blooded new EP In Its Nature

Not long ago, Fremantle five-piece The Hunting Birds released their spellbinding new EP In Its Nature. Whittled with moody soundscapes and dark themes aplenty, it’s an EP that’ll reel you in like a fish hook and never let go.

Eager to dive a little further into their release, we reached out to Connor and Kendra from the band for an insider’s perspective.

Take a track by track journey through In Its Nature, the enthralling new EP from Fremantle five-piece The Hunting Birds.

Currents

CONNOR: This track came from a place Kendra and I felt really attached to at the time we were writing it. It’s kind of held as a strong theme throughout this entire release process, if I was looking at it in hindsight.

It’s about being resilient when tested with something larger then yourself, to stay strong, to remain present. It’s a slow burner that really starts the record with a sense of hope and endurance.

Here We Go

KENDRA: This song is a souvenir in the exploration of opportunity. A personal reminder to advance despite restriction and take those opportunities that fly past the regular rhythms we set ourselves.

I sought after a light hearted, easy listening vibe for this song. The chant-like chorus extends itself to anyone listening and I enjoy the fact this song allows for a strong contrast to the other songs on the EP.

Naive Eyes

CONNOR: It’s a tune I started constructing with a few of my mates when I was sixteen. I remember being in a really rough position at the time, going through a plethora of personal things that made me really unsettled. I had taken what I had written in that construction and began watching this song evolve into what’s on the record.

I’ve grown up alongside the song, more then any other I’ve been blessed to write. It’s a bombastic, sarcastic expression of feeling trapped. Loud guitars, pulsating drum, hypnotising piano riffs and a chorus that sticks in your brains.

Hidden In These Waters

KENDRA: The triumph of calling upon people’s sinister side is explained in Hidden In These Waters. There’s always a question of pure intentions with some people that swim in and out of your path and this was the feeling I focused on with this song.

Taking this song into the studio, it walked out different then it had came in. Less aggressive, more reliant on the power of listening to the lyrics. It now reminds me of an old country western movie wailing through an open corridor.

Burn This House Down

KENDRA: It’s aggressive, it’s mean and it’s a little whacky. Connor and I wrote this one in a super dirt driven ride of emotions. You could say that we pushed the story told to a manic state, almost delving into a clinically insane state of mind.

We wanted to showcase the grit and gravel the lyrics contain through the melodic and dynamics within this tune.
