From The Wombats’ new mascot to Violent Soho’s new friends, there were far too many unforgettable moments at Groovin The Moo 2017.
Regional touring festival Groovin The Moo returned to Newcastle over the weekend, marking 11 years at Maitland Showground, and my sixth year at the festival. With a lineup of international acts such as Milky Chance, Against Me!, The Darkness, The Wombats and more, GTM showed the importance of showcasing local acts too- from Unearthed winners Introvert, to the much loved Aussie acts Allday, The Jungle Giants, Violent Soho and The Smith Street Band.
Despite the few young teenagers already passed out as my friends and I walked through the festival gates at around midday, it was an incredible day. I’ve spoken to a few people who have suggested they’ve grown out of Groovin, I’ve also spoken to grandparents at the festival who cringe at the thought of missing the event.
Yes, it’s an all ages event, and many may view that negatively but I for one am so thankful for festivals such as GTM for allowing people of all ages the opportunity to see their favourite acts. Groovin The Moo is what sparked my love for live music, and for that I am forever grateful.
There were a bunch of memorable moments from this year’s Groovin The Moo, but I’ve summed them up for you.

Until the beautiful orange sunset glazed over the showground, the sun was shooting straight at the main stages, Wagner thinking creatively and well, very practically.
Violent Soho bringing out Phil Jamieson to cover a Grinspoon’s More Than You Are
Something that only happened at Maitland’s Groovin The Moo. Violent Soho were visibly ecstatic to be bringing out an idol of theirs to jam with.
The Wombats and their pet wombat
It was only a stuffed animal but still held up to the excitement from the crowd. The Wombats played at GTM in 2011, the year before I started going, so their set was a pretty magical moment for me.
People saying they wanted to leave because Tash Sultana pulled out
Only a highlight because I found it hilarious. I should have showed them to the exit. If that was the only reason you were at GTM I think you have a few things to reconsider.
Big love to GTM for always putting on a fun festival.
