R&B is a fine art, you either have the talent to produce this genre music or you don’t. In Fortunes‘ case, they have the talent and are ready to show the world what they can do. We’ve had a little sneak peek at their upcoming sophomore EP Jacket and all of you are in for a treat.

Jacket EP

You can keep your pants on, but Jacket proves to be another bleeding cool accessory for Melbourne duo Fortunes.

The Melbourne based duo are Barnaby Matthews and Conor McCabe who both grew up in New Zealand and have been friends since they were teenagers. Matthews and McCabe have always had a connection with music; McCabe has been making it since he was three and Matthews starting playing the drums at nine, playing in couple of bands since then. He only moved into producing about five years ago when he moved to Australia because he couldn’t take his drum kit.

The first single off the EP is Bomber, a four and a half minute track beginning with a jittery trap beat and calms down to a smooth beat. All of this is complimented by McCabe’s smooth vocals and lyrical imagery. Meanwhile Justin Bieber (a song, not the person) has a number of references to R&B songs such as Jumpin’ Jumpin’ by Destiny’s Child, a little variation to Kelly Rowland’s Stole: “We can be movie stars / we’ve got the chance to get that far”, which is tied at the end with Justin Bieber’s (the person) Where R U Now?Feel like Justin Bieber / where are you now that I need ya / where are you now that I need ya?

This EP is beautifully produced; naturally with Matthews’ history as a drummer most the music is swimming in beats with a few synths. It’s all balanced out with McCabe’s soulful and touching voice. It’s so smooth and sultry, there will probably be a lot of babies made to the sound of his voice. Apparently this EP was inspired by a polaroid of McCabe sitting with a special jacket hanging on the back of the seat. added to the fact that the twosome are inspired by Rihanna, Beyoncé, The Neptunes, Justin Timberlake, Anderson Paak and D’Angelo it’s no wonder they’ve got this R&B thing down pat.

Fortunately (sorry not sorry) for the Melbournian readers the EP launch will be at Hugs & Kisses on February 22. Bomber and Justin Bieber are already up on Soundcloud for your listening pleasure and the whole EP will be out on February 16.
