Texas parents could face charges after ditching their daughter for a gig 2,000km away

A pair Texas parents could potentially face twenty years in prison after leaving their eleven-year-old daughter home alone to attend a heavy metal gig over 2,000 kilometres away, five states over.

The couple were arrested on Monday night on second-degree child endangerment charges after leaving their daughter unattended for a day and a half to attend a Godflesh concert in Detroit, Michigan.

Godflesh, who initially formed in 1982, was only playing a select set of US dates after a show at the Psycho Las Vegas festival.

After being notified by a relative that the child had been left at home alone, police reportedly arrived to discover the eleven-year-old trying to cook herself some food using the stove.

According to the Detroit Metro Times, the mother said she contacted her sister and asked her to check in on their daughter while they were gone, but the daughter claims that no one came to visit. After hours of attempting to make contact, police finally reached the couple and discovered they were actually in Lousiana, much closer than anticipated.

In Texas, a parent can be charged with child endangerment if it is deemed that he or she “intentionally abandons the child in any place under circumstances that expose the child to an unreasonable risk of harm”.

The band are yet to comment on the incident.
