This year marked 50 years since the Monterey Pop Festival. The event was America’s first foray into the large-scale rock concert format, and a cornerstone of the 1960s cultural revolution. It also kicked off the Summer of Love.

Take a trip back to 1967 with these stunning back and white portraits of counterculture kids during the Summer of Love by Elaine Mayes.

To celebrate the anniversary of iconic event back in June, photographer Elaine Mayes exhibited a stunning collection of black-and-white photographs taken during the era in San Francisco. Mayes worked as a photojournalist in San Fran in the late 60s, during which she shot Monterey Pop Festival, and explored the burgeoning counterculture and the people who participated in it.
