Sydney duo Hannahband are a self-proclaimed ‘Emo Punx / Dad Rock’ band made up of Nathan Martin and Marnie Vaughn. Their debut album is titled Retirement and the opening song Receding Hairline, all of which provides a bold statement that these guys don’t take themselves too seriously.

With an equal mix of thrash cymbals and throaty screams, Sydney’s Hannahband will make you want to raise your middle finger high, pack a backpack of necessities and journey off to chase your punkx rock dreams.

What they do really well, though, is transport you back to a time in your mind when punk rock was high and the element of fun was rife in music. Granted, this was before many of us were born, but we’ve all heard about it, read about it and wished we were born in the delicious era of the 70’s getting spat on by the Sex Pistols and fighting the law with The Clash. With an equal mix of thrash cymbals and throaty screams, Hannahband will make you want to raise your middle finger high, pack a backpack of necessities and journey off to chase your punk rock dreams.

Martin and Vaughn formed Hannahband in 2013 after their previous outfit Sweet Teeth disbanded, and I have to say a part of me is praising the shouty heavens that they decided to give music another shot. Retirement took me on a journey of musical emotions, from the aforementioned need to pack my backpack and journey off, to wanting to lay on the floor of my teenage bedroom and listen to Minor Threat or Fugazi (inspiration from track two G Morals).

I Will Let You Down evokes dark tribulations of lost friendships and broken hearts, but these woeful feelings are short lived. By the end of the closing track Show Them Love, you’ll find yourself washed with an air of positivity and trust that the world has some little corners of hope for us all; “Cut out the parts that make you feel sick / keep the rest / keep the rest and cherish it.”

Scoring themselves Independent Artist of the Week on FBI Radio, these central-coast punk devotees merge elements of real-talk kind of emotions with the fun loving core of thrash, garage and punk rock, and it’s something that you really need to hear to believe. Even better, go check out some of their live videos on YouTube and you’ll get a feel for what Hannahband are all about.

While Vaughn puts her all into beating the shit out of her drum skins, the addition of her feminine vocals to Martin’s powerhouse yelling make the emotions of the lyrics really come to life. Martin is enough of a front man to not need anyone else’s energy beside him, and as an entity of music, passion and kicking ass, Hannahband are definitely one to sink your dirty punk rock teeth into.
