Remember Beck’s last tour? Sydney City Limits is opening Australia to some long overdue acts

By News

The inaugural Sydney City Limits Festival ticket sales are now open! The lineup includes Beck, Justice, Grace Jones, Gang of Youths and Tash Sultana, with a bunch more locked in and still more on the way.

Run by the team responsible for Falls Festival and Splendour in the Grass, Sydney City Limits is bringing artists to the great Aussie continent who haven’t made it out in quite some time. But how long exactly?

The inaugural Sydney City Limits lineup went viral, and with good reason. How long has it been since Beck or Justice graced Australian shores?

French house duo Justice have been absent for a little too long, last appearing in Australia on the since-defunct Parklife tour in mid 2012. As someone who has had these fellas on my ‘bands I need to see before I die’ list that whole time I can assure you, five years ain’t short.

It’s a similar stint for Beck, who played Harvest Festival plus sideshows in November 2012. Prior to that he showed up for V Festival in 2007, so maybe he just has a five-year recurring reminder to say ‘hey, how about you tour Australia again?’

Grace Jones and Phoenix both toured Australia in 2014, for Vivid and Future Music Festival respectively, but it’s The Libertines who really take the cake here. I had previously been told they had never played an Aussie show, but lo and behold they have played one; a gig without their frontman at Sydney’s Gaelic Club in 2004.

So if you want to see Justice or Beck for the first time in five years, Grace Jones or Phoenix for the first time since 2014, or the Libertines for pretty much the first time ever, Sydney City Limits is your go.

Sydney City Limits is modelled off of the heritage Austin City Limits, bringing together the best in food, drink, arts and music in the lush parklands of inner Sydney. This kind of event is long overdue.

It’s a pretty wonderful thing when you see some of the world’s greatest joining forces across genre and homeland to deliver a thunderous musical event in the heart of Sydney. The festival is child friendly with a Sydney Kiddie Limits section available to those parents brave enough to bring along their spawn.

We’ve given you the full line up below just to keep you keen and get you jumping online ready to snatch up those tickets.
