Soop – Buffalo Buffalo

Soop is the bambino being pushed out by three friends. After bouncing tunes off each other in their apartment for a number of years, this Melbourne based trio just released their debut 5 track EP, Buffalo Buffalo. Now, if you’re going to be putting sounds into drawers, then their music can be placed into one that holds experimental genres covering mash-ups of progressive pop and psych-pop.

Ostrich of War is a funkalicious track which leans towards a more alternative rock sound, mingled with a bit of psychedelic ambience thrown in for good measure. The flowing synths and guitar reverb lend the track a very pneumatic quality. Take a ride in your convertible or in your friend’s convertible, let the breeze flow over skin and then listen to this one – it’ll give you a goosebump or two.

Johnny Fine opens with the soft delicate pop of a champagne bottle being opened by the hands of an expert. The dreamy vocals which mount the drowsy drumbeats and smooth synths will transport you into misty seas of emotion. Without cursory foreplay, the song takes you directly to its nostalgic climax which keeps you dangling just at the borders of heartbreak but never quite pushing you over. There is a moment of silence at the very heart of this track and you’ll fall into momentary love with the voice that reaches out to you from the other side of the break. And when that saxophone solo hits… ah, you’ll have to go find out yourself. My opinion? This track sounds like sweet slow sex.

The tracks are available on iTunes and Bandcamp and you can also find them on Spotify and Soundcloud. Go grab yourself some Soop*.
