Songs played ‘from another room’ is the hardest nostalgia drug out there

Recently we’ve stumbled across a well-fed Youtube community dedicated to the ‘from another room’ effect. By tweaking reverb, amplitude and other parameters, audio-savvy editors have been making your favourite songs sound like they’re being played through your bedroom wall.

And there’s… just… something about it. The first one I heard was Green Day’s American Idiot – a song my neighbour blasted into the triple digits back when I was a wee lad. Hearing that muffled kick drum was like having a pair of rose-tinted goggles shoved down my throat.

Are you thinking of a place? Songs edited to sound like they’re playing from another room is the hardest nostalgia drug we’ve come across in our lives.

Then it was hits from The Killers or The Strokes – more relics from my teenage years that were nostalgic enough as studio versions. Throw in a shade of ‘but you’re in a bathroom at a party’ and I’m on my knees.

There’s an endless catalogue up on Youtube for your listening pleasure, from those mid-2000s goldies to more recent classics like Lana Del Rey’s Video Games or Tame Impala’s New Person, Same Old Mistakes.
