Silent Jay

Silent Jay is one creative Melbourne local who just recently he added quite a number to his Soundcloud. His most recent release is something else, titled Day Six: Passamakwodi* I don’t even know what it means (sounds like the an exert from a travel diary) but it’s awesome. Silent Jay says his LOST TAPES collection are “experimental-rap beats made on an adventure in the Australian desert with my SP-404 and tape walkman”.

The song kicks off with these aged jazz piano segments accompanied by a magical sound bite, and all of sudden those chords sound like they’ve copped a beating from the fat teenage bully next door. They’ve been contorted and manipulated with technical loops and heavy beats. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s gone and added this creative twist throughout the song with several sound bites from classic Disney films. Disney is renowned for creating a ‘magical’ world, and by simply adding these old school elements Silent Jay has produced an innovative mystic fusion of the old and new. It’s brilliantly refreshing.

His songs carry a unique blend of soul and funk as their foundation, with differing standout aspects being thrown in to create complex tracks. Tracks like Day Two: woof are eerily dope, and have been mastered with heavy rhythms and sweet sampled beats. Day One: Alldagurlz mixes up the popular N.E.R.D track with a sick cosmic vibe. He’s already had a busy start to year playing alongside Cashmere Cat and doing the rounds in Melbourne, and now he’ll be touring with none other than Flying Lotus.
