Chatting waxed chests and the North-West with SCK CHX and NEIGHBOURHOOD VOID

Two up-and-coming Sydney punksters you need to know about are SCK CHX and NEIGHBOURHOOD VOID. The former came our way courtesy of local imprint Yeah Nah Yeah, and the latter blew our minds earlier in the year with their reckless debut LP Childhood Trauma.

Before they both tear it up at our Issue 5 launch, we chucked the two together for a civil chat.

Ahead of a joint gig at the Happy Mag Issue 5 launch, SCK CHX and Neighbourhood Void cross-examine Maccas, body hair and heaps good punk choons.

SCK CHX interviews Neighbourhood Void

SC: What are you listening to at the moment?

NV: Been listening to way too much Leonard Cohen and crying like a baby, love it.

SC: Is your band name a reference to the TV show Neighbours? If not, where does it come from?

NV: Nope, Gio originally came up with the name from listening to Body Count’s There Goes the Neighbourhood and we chucked Void on the end because legendary punk band. The name also graced meaning in us, as living in Sydney’s north-west most of the time feels like living in the stick. Or I guess a ‘neighbourhood void’ with not much happening.

SC: What neighbourhood are you from?

NV: Mikey and Gio both grew up in Glenwood kinda near Blacktown and haven’t left the hills area since.

SC: If you weren’t playing punk choons what other genre would you explore?

NV: Personally, I think I’d be an acoustic/folk musician so I could make people cry like Leonard Cohen does to me.

NV: Whats your favourite thing about being in a band (can’t say free drink coupons)?

SC: Being able to hang with your friends in a chill and productive way.

NV: You go to Maccas and the frozen coke machines busted up, what do you do?

SC: Ask for ice cream and when they tell us it’s busted we leave drive through and go to 7 Eleven and get Gaytimes.

NV: Do you have any pre-gig rituals?

SC: We all wax Josh’s chest before each show. It’s really soothing for everyone

NV: Which part of sound check is your favourite?

SC: When it’s over.

NV: If you could play alongside any band in the world who would it be and why?

SC: Beach Boys around the time they released Pet Sounds, cause it’s one of the best albums ever made.
