PREMIERE: Get wrapped up in Turtle Skull’s brain melting new clip Eden

With their self-described “flower doom” sound in tow, Turtle Skull have released a warm and vibrant video for their latest single Eden.

Eden marks the first single from the band’s upcoming record, which you might already recognise as one of the finalists from our Needle in the Hay vinyl competition.

Made up of Dean McLeod, Charlie Gradon, Julian Frese, Dan Frizza and Tobia Blefari, Turtle Skull strike with influences equally as colourful as their music. From Black Mountain, Sleep, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, to many more, the band add a fresh new outlook to the Australian psych rock scene.

Eden by Turtle Skull is a slow, burning psych rock release. The track comes wrapped in groove, fit to soundtrack your tripped-out nights or cruisey arvos.

Eden rolls like an otherworldly soundscape, with low riffs, groaning guitar and deep bass lines converging to form something truly unique. The clip sees filmmaker Charlie Gradon cranking up the psych magic, framed through a kaleidoscopic lens and trippy filters sure to mesmerise viewers.

Guitarist and vocalist Dean McLeod explains the band’s writing process, sharing:

“It’s about layers and textures – closing your eyes and seeing how deep you can go, really getting in touch with each individual sound and movement.”

“You can say so much with just one note or sound if you focus on the texture of it, the way it warbles, vibrates and oscillates. Ultimately it’s about mind expansion through music – I want to facilitate a moving experience for the listener and the audience.”

Ultimately, this shimmering texture allows for the vocals to drive up the groove factor, playing to the strength of the track’s meaty hooks.

On the inspiration behind the song, McLeod divulges, “The song is directly inspired by an experience my girlfriend Rachel and I had while we were travelling the year before last.”

“We had just arrived in Arizona and, through some wild synchronicities, we met a wonderful man who took us under his wing and invited us to some really incredible hot springs out in the desert. We had a night hanging out sharing stories with him under the stars in the middle of nowhere and the song kind of explains what happened. A lot of the inspiration for the band actually came from that time away.”

The buzzing soundscape of Eden makes for a lush listen, while amping you up for future jams to follow.

Eden is available now via Bandcamp (and shortly via Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon). Their upcoming album will drop May 17 via Art As Catharsis.
