Native to Melbourne with no shortage in the talent department, Phia is a singer/songwriter and lady of live-looping with a sound so intergalactic it may transport you to another realm. Made up of Sophia Exiner (vocals, loops/kalimba) with the help of Josh Teicher (guitar/effects), Phia is an indie-pop experience inspired by astronomy, feminism, fantasy and novels.
With two releases already under her belt and a third on its way, new single Oxide will take you on a whirlwind of synths, fuzzed out guitars, distorted drums and dreamy, glistening vocals. With the addition of a vintage Casio keyboard and lyrics focused on organic matter, Oxide is a sneak preview of what’s to come in the upcoming EP, The Woman Who Counted The Stars.
Anchored in the natural world and grasping at the outer reaches, Oxide sees Phia leap away from her earthly binds with stunning aptitude.
The atmospheric new track was inspired by an interview with Björk regarding female singer/songwriters in music, who seemingly have more of a voice when singing about boyfriends or loved ones over science, politics, and, well… math equations. To make a statement that breaks away from the binds of gender representation and explores a completely alternate path, Oxide is about the recent discovery of 60,000 year-old bacteria living in giant caves under the earth.
Crafting a sound anchored by floaty, harmonised vocals and synth overtones, Oxide is cosmic experience buzzing with sonic energy. If you’re not charmed by Phia’s vocals, love for outer space and pioneer sentiment that she projects into her music, you’ll need to resort back to love songs.
This cheeky new video is a taste of what’s to come from The Woman Who Counted The Stars, an EP which is set to be released on September 29th ahead of Phia’s European tour.
