We first came across Melbourne producer Oliver Sol in the tail end of 2015, following the release of his debut single After Dark. It was a running start for the beatmaker; an entrancing dance track which shone a bright light upon his technical prowess.
More than a year on, the young dancehall prodigy is attacking his career with a familiar strength, his latest track How Did You Know featuring Citizen Kay being a tour de force of leaden beats, chunky synths and a prolific vocal performance by the man himself.
Today Oliver Sol unveils the video accompaniment to his monster track, a rocking, trippy acid dream which is as magnetic, heavy and affecting as the original song.
Descend into house madness with Oliver Sol and Citizen Kay, who venture to understand how deep the rabbit hole goes in How Did You Know.
Happy to abstain from the happy-go-lucky vocal house which dominates the popular sphere at the moment, Oliver Sol prefers an edgier brand of dance music which favours the brooding, even creepy ends of the producer’s spectrum.
From the pitch-shifted, siren synths which open the track to the dissonant, effected vocals which close it, How Did You Know breaks the EDM mould too many producers are following like scripture. The video follows similar influence; opting to employ an overarching, dark unease throughout.
Directed by Georgia Grant and produced by Jenny Cahir, the clip follows two protagonists as they flirt their way through a nightmare realm where nothing is certain and a persistent fetishisation creeps in from every shadowed corner.
The ill-lit sexuality and musical promiscuity of How Did You Know climbs as the track peaks, dramatically fluctuating before dropping off completely, allowing the film clip to also conclude, in much the same way it started.
