PREMIERE: MYTHS serve up psych-pop perfection on debut album Paradigm

There’s something in the water out west.

As home to some of Australia’s most celebrated psychedelic acts, it’s no surprise that Perth outfit MYTHS (formerly The High Learys) have unleashed a refined psych-pop assemblage with their debut album Paradigm.

Paradigm marks a mature and zestful debut album for MYTHS, the band producing a psych-pop experience full of flair.

Made up of Jamie Turner (vocals, bass), Mike Nutt (vocals, piano, synths), Mitchell J Benson (drums, percussion), Matt Williams (guitars) and Jamie Canny (saxophone), the band recorded and produced Paradigm independently, in spaces ranging from beachside studios, to a cabin in the woods, and assorted living rooms.

It’s this authenticity that allows Paradigm to flow with a charm harking to late ’60s and ’70s psychedelia. Combined with futuristic synthscapes, musical touchstones are found in the unlikely combination of Electric Light Orchestra, Wings, Air and Ratatat.

The ten-track record is laced with intricate melodies, transportive synths, ambient drums and groovy guitar riffs. Standout bangers include Nostalgia, a layered and vibrant fusion of electric pop and pysch-rock. It’s a tune that only gets better upon each listen, bolstered by confident vocals and a sexy saxophone set.

Opening track K.E.T offers a wild punch of energy, while Charmless Wonder unwraps like a romantic slow dance, pierced by the power of psych-pop.

Stars, an upbeat odyssey with touches of melancholy, embodies the heart of Paradigm as a celebration of celestial beats. This is the type of album that ought to come with directions: rinse and repeat.

Paradigm is available for pre-order in a limited run of teal and pink 180-gram vinyl, to be released across digital platforms on February 2.

MYTHS are celebrating the release of Paradigm with a hometown launch party at Jack Rabbit Slim’s on February 10. Grab all the details here.
