PREMIERE: Mr Sophistication shows little regard for genre on his brilliant debut EP

Melbourne artist Chris Simmonds has been making the rounds for a couple of years now, formerly with his band Grand Prismatic. Though now, with his new project Mr Sophistication, he’s making music that feels far more adventurous.

With little regard for the boundaries of genre, Mr Sophisticiation’s music is simultaneously considered and explorative. Simmonds navigates a plethora of sounds to deliver something truly his own. Today, with the release of three new tracks, he has immediately established himself as one of Aussie music’s most exciting emerging acts.

With the release of three new tracks, Melbourne artist Mr Sophistication has immediately established himself as one of the more exciting new voices in the Aussie music scene.

On his new mini-EP Tune, Simmonds presents a small collection of songs that showcase his versatility and willingness to experiment. Throughout its duration, he weaves together elements of proto-punk, shoegaze, brit-pop, and indie-rock. The result is a dynamic sound that never sits in one place for too long.

Tune is a punchy slice of Brit-sounding post-punk, reminiscent of 80’s bands like The The. Black Cloudy Day is a melancholic, jazz-laden alt-rock number that incorporates the immersive and sombre sounds of Radiohead or James Blake. By the time the EP’s frantic and surreal closing track Don’t Fall To Pieces reaches its conclusion, you’ll have been roped in completely to Mr Sophistications diverse and mesmerising sounds.

These are still early days for Chris Simmonds’ new project, but judging by what we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more quality tunes from Mr Sophistication.

For now, do yourself a favour and listen to the three new tracks above.
