Bouncing between sweeping shoegaze harmonies and deadly punk vivacity, CHARM.OFFENSIVE is as the title suggests; abusive and alluring at the same time.
Straight off the bat, CHARM.OFFENSIVE opens with a trademark droning in single How Soon Is Too Soon (It’s Not Vintage Its Used). Standing as a sign of what’s to come, distorted melodies form the track’s engine room while fuzzy, imperfect vocals dance on top.
It’s as easy a listening experience as you’ll find on the record because before too long, things descend into hysteria.
My Friend Has A Car He Starts With A Hammer (What Has Seen Can’t Be Unseen) is likely the record’s liveliest cut, a no-good headbanger jammed with grunts, meaty distortion and a BPM made for starting fights. Also, what a great fucking song title.
CHARM.OFFENSIVE is a rollercoaster ride, and not the kind you look forward to. We’re talking breakneck speeds, corkscrews and shitloads of screaming. Lower moments like the devilish DEMON And The Street sit in violent contrast to more upbeat rompers S I N I S T E R or Bite My Lip, providing a ton of flavour to what would already be a killer release.
In other words, it’s everything a Die! Die! Die! album should be. Six records in, the lads from New Zealand sure haven’t lost their touch.
