Pikelet

Somewhere in Melbourne suburbia was a starved creative by the name of Evelyn Morris. This Jill-of-all trades not only had a natural handle of weird instruments, but played in a few Australian bands such as Baseball and True Radical Miracle, before starting her solo act as Pikelet circa 2007.

Not so solo anymore! This now four-piece, lead by Evelyn, have come a long way. The name Pikelet comes from exactly what you’d think: the sweet, doughy goodness of beaten eggs and flour. Yes, there’s actually a greater meaning behind this, which you can read on Pikelet’s label’s bio page.

pikeletEvelyn Morris played around with an array of crazy instruments before starting her solo project, Pikelet, in 2007. Now, its a four piece specialising in glitch.

Pikelet are an experimentation of indie folk, dream pop, soft rock, with hazy electronic ambience woven in. Listening to their music reminds me of the folkyness of Laura Veirs mixed with the rock of Howling Bells. Evelyn is one of those people who can play a thousand different instruments and can find a cool tone colour from a random object, which she uses to experiment with and create new sounds. She has toured a great deal in Australia and overseas in other bands, with Pikelet supporting Sarah Blasko on tour.

There’s definitely a progression of sound happening if you listen back to the band’s earlier stuff. Pikelet’s self-titled debut album had recordings of raw sounds, coming from an array of instruments such as bellowing accordions, bongos and live drums. Her latest album, Calluses, infuses these elements with electronic sounds and samples. The drones and arpeggios in songs like Bug in Mouth and They Call It Love?… Wow are now midi electro pianos, delays and echoes – most notable in tracks like Combo. This experimentation can be heard most in Pikelet’s Remix EP.

The band aren’t currently touring, but keep a watch on Pikelet as I’m sure their new sounds will be pumping from your speakers to your ears in no time.
