Northern Rights: Finland becomes the 22nd country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage

As if you didn’t already have enough reasons to shed your old life, drop everything and head straight to the ancient and picturesque Finland, here’s a straw to break the camel’s back. Same-sex marriage has just become legal over there, so it’s high time to jet your partner around the world for a ceremony under the Aurora Borealis.

It’s been a long time coming, with the legislation being voted in back in 2014, but the official rollover is today. Just in time for a very Fat Tuesday.

Looks like the Nords have the right of it again: same-sex marriage has officially landed in Finland today.

This makes Finland the 22nd country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, but funnily enough they’re the last Nordic nation to do so. For the homoseksuaalinen of Finland, it’s a day to celebrate, but not one that couldn’t have come sooner.

And yep, once again, Australia curls up into the fetal position with unfiltered shame for how behind the times we are. It’s not like we don’t have an active, engaged and totally fucking fabulous LGBTQI community, it’s just that…

You know what, I don’t even have a reason. Fuck knows why, but conservatism is on-trend in Australia right now. Let’s hope it doesn’t last forever.
