Montgomery – Piñata

Montgomery is the latest signing to Melbourne boutique label I OH YOU (home to Violent Soho, DZ Deathrays, DMAs, Snakadaktal and more). Despite her delicately profound voice, the Queensland singer-songwriter holds her own amongst the frenetic garage-pop, indie thrash and hard-rocking post-grunge of I OH YOU’s existing roster.

A spine-tingling and gorgeous addition to the indie electronic scene. Surrounded by synths, the sweet vocals which carry a delicate sobriety makes Montgomery something special.

The Gold Coast singer has just dropped the first single from her upcoming debut EP, New Clear War (a six-track record about “failed relationships”) and it is as pensive as it is heavy on the heartstrings. Piñata is conveyed as a heart-baring profession of emotion – “Crack me open like you always do / Say you’re only bringing out the best of me / But you break me.” The lyrics are heartfelt, raw and humanistic, encapsulated beautifully through Montgomery’s heavenly dulcet tone. Instrumentation is also on point, where gossamer-light vocals are accompanied by reverberating synths and steadily beating bass.

Produced by Tom Iansek of Big Scary and #1 Dads, Piñata reflects the prolificacy of the Melbourne-based songwriter and producer’s impeccable production skills. Harnessing a skillful balance between light and depth, gentle and heavy, there’s an unrivalled brooding introspection in Montgomery’s debut single.

As with Piñata, earlier release War Cry was co-produced by Iansek, and is also typified by a similar melancholic, acoustic-driven ballad. Vocals as diaphanous as moths’ wings intersperse between gauzy clouds of twinkling chords and shimmering synths, creating an atmospherically tranquil track.

A strikingly unique new addition for I OH YOU, Montgomery is clearly something special. With the two already highly impressive offerings, we’re anticipating big things from Montgomery’s forthcoming EP.
