Melbourne-based indie quartet Mantell prove that cars aren’t the only great things to come out of garages.
Formed in 2013 by brothers Quintin and Connor Tuan, Brayden Filippone and Sam Reader, Mantell began by jamming in the garages of their teenage homes and have since garnered the Melbourne music scene’s attention on the airwaves and in the live arena.
With vocal melodies and hazy guitar lines paying homage to the likes of The War on Drugs, Radiohead and Big Scary, it’s easy to see why Mantell is packing out venues over Melbourne.
Thirty-Two was written and recorded over the course of a year in the Tuan brothers’ garage using a bunch of vintage instruments and analogue recording gear. The band produced the EP themselves but handed the job of post-production over to Magic America‘s Matt Stapleton, who helped shape the sound into the final product.

Lulu, the first single from the new EP, took the band just over a week to record. Mantell drew some of its inspiration for the track from Wollongong duo Hockey Dad, whose nostalgic, sun-washed guitar and late afternoon vocals have become signature.
The outro, too, pays homage to The War on Drugs; the huge guitar solo at the end really taking the song from one level to the next.
