Masashi Wakui’s photos of Tokyo at night are like a neon urban fairytale

Masashi Wakui

Masashi Wakui is a Tokyo-based photographer who stalks around his city at night, slinking amongst the shadows and down rain-slicked alleyways to capture neon-swathed fairytales.

Masashi Wakui’s photos of Tokyo at night are like a neon urban fairytale, combining the vibrant aesthetic of Akira with the Romanticism of Ghibli.

His lens focuses on the interplay between darkness and light, snapping streets at night and the vibrant colours that emerge once the sun goes down. The result is reminiscent of sci-fi classics like Blade Runner or Akira (or even the cover of Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust), with a touch of Ghibli magic.

Wakui is prolific too, constantly uploading new material to his Flickr account in a perpetual, free-flowing visual narrative, so you can keep up to date with his work there.
