The Copehagen-based artist, real name Emil Wilk, has been clocking up attention all over the shop with a string of vibrant alt-pop scorchersMaybe I Love Kokomo (out today) is the latest in that sequence, a twinkling love letter for time recently spent in Paris.

To celebrate release day, we hit up Emil for his own take on the EP.

Nestea commercials and secret towers in Copenhagen: take a track-by-track journey through M.I.L.K.’s wondrous new EP Maybe I Love Kokomo.

Rebound (feat. Blondage)

This was the last song I wrote for the EP. I actually thought we were done at this point, we had five songs and this one just kind of happened while we were putting last touches on the other productions. I had a huge fight with my girlfriend on the day so the song grew out of that frustration. In a way it’s a break-up song, but at same time it’s a love song, because it basically says “Hey babe, we can fight and breakup all we want – but I know we’ll get back together in the end”.

For the final breakdown of the song I asked my friend Pernille (Blondage) to represent the other side of the argument. I love her voice and how Esben (the other half of Blondage) produced the vocals.

Slow Emotions

When I started I knew I wanted to keep the beach vibe of my first EP, but this time the songs should be made for ‘dancing on the beach’ rather than ‘chilling at the beach’.

So with that in mind I wrote Slow Emotions, both a classic love song about two strangers meeting on the dance floor, but also a hint for all of us to react on the rising temperatures and abandon our ‘slow emotions’ towards climate change.

Make My Way To Paris (feat. Benjamin Biolay)

To explain this track I need to explain my obsession with Paris and my fan-girlness when it comes to Benjamin Biolay. In my book he’s one of the true contemporary icons of French culture. A great poet of our time, and a brilliant musician – the main man of Paris in a way.

So naturally, I was completely stoked to get to work with him on this song. Make My Way To Paris trails the last two years of my life that I’ve spent trying to figure out my new part-time home. I was climbing the walls when he played me his feature verse in which he welcomes me to Paris and warns me of the city’s addictive traps. This is my personal favourite song that Iʼve ever been part of.

Stretch Your Eyes

Sometimes when things are getting crazy in my life and I lose perspective, I’ll visit a secret tower in Copenhagen. Stretch Your Eyes is inspired by the feeling I get when I’m standing up there at night.

From the tower Copenhagen is small, I see things in a new perspective and everything just tends to fall back into place inside my head.

Nestea Plunge

A hymn for the classic Nestea commercials from the ’90s. They were soooo corny, but soooo good. The concept is super simple; they all start with a group of people who are sweating like crazy under the burning sun, then one of them pulls out a Nestea and takes a sip – everything slows down as they close their eyes and lean back, but just before hitting the ground it turns into cold, refreshing water.

The commercials were made all over the world, so there’s a lot of weird and wonderful versions. YouTube ‘Nestea Plunge’ and put on the song.

So Fine

I wrote this song for a special someone that need a little cheering up. It was supposed to be just for them, but I fell in love with it after a while and now I’m super happy it ended up making the cut.
