This Record Store Day is shaping up to be a corker. Some of the exclusive releases include new music from The War on Drugs, Against Me!, and Poliça; and limited-edition reissues celebrating David Bowie, The Smiths and Lou Reed.
We’re particularly excited about a rare recording from Pink Floyd listed as a previously unreleased 14:57 minute mono version of Interstellar Overdrive, pressed on 12-inch vinyl, which will be limited to just 4,000 copies.

A press release from Legacy Recordings offered up some more info about the release:
“The mono single will be a one-sided 12″ 180-gram black vinyl and will play at 33 1/3 RPM. The single will come with a fold-out poster and an A6 postcard featuring a classic image of the band taken when they were recording their debut single, ‘Arnold Layne’. Written and performed by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, ‘Interstellar Overdrive’ is an unheard recording from 1966, running at close to 15 minutes long. The original recording was done at the Thomson studio in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire on November 31, 1966, before the band were signed to EMI.”
Notably, the statement reveals that this unearthed version was recorded on November 31st at the Thomson studio in Hertfordshire. However, studio records make no note of this; instead, The Future Heart points to an October 31st Pink Floyd session as the true source of this unreleased track.
According to various sources, including Glenn Povey’s Echoes: The Complete History Of Pink Floyd and Julian Palacios’ Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd: Dark Globe, this session yielded a demo version of Interstellar Overdrive that eventually served as the soundtrack for San Francisco, a 15-minute documentary by filmmaker and a friend Syd Barrett, Anthony Stern.
Aside from its inclusion in the film, this recording, indeed, has never been officially released.
