Leave The Planet – Unreleased Life

Who knows whether it’s from seeing so many cliché music videos or if it’s the fact that music has underlying teleporting powers, but there’s this distinctive imagery that comes into play when listening to certain songs that places you in the front seat of a car with the windows down, your right arm flailing in the wind as you drive along an isolated road with coastal views, not giving a flying fuck about anything or anyone.

How to Leave The Planet: Phone NASA. Their phone number is (713) 483-3111. Explain that it’s very important that you get away as soon as possible – Douglas Adams

Dream-pop/shoegaze duo from London, Leave The Planet, only formed in early 2014, however, they seem to ignite this vision of liberation so effortlessly with their latest single, Unreleased Life, providing an atmospheric and mood-altering sound that will have you feeling like you truly have ‘left the planet’ (sorry, I couldn’t resist).

At a first listen, it’s a bit of a struggle to understand the lyrics as the music overpowers the vocals significantly, but what’s great is that we don’t even really need to know them to understand what the song is about. From the sound alone, we can immediately sense feelings of freedom and this can be identified through many of the lines describing the beauty of youth and how nature can be a channel to evoke these feelings – “When I looked into the sun again, I felt young again”.

One of my favourite things about this song, though, is the versatility of it and how it can be that one song you listen to over and over again on road trips, the song you listen to just before you go to bed, the song you listen to on your morning runs to make you feel as light as a feather, or more obviously, the song you listen to when you’re home alone and high as rent.
