Do you like Violent Soho? Yes? Have you listened to Straight Arrows? The former handpicked the latter from a bunch of hopeful rock stars to support them on their Hungry Ghost national tour. These guys have been kicking around for a while, releasing their debut album (with the best, 60s mushroom album art) It’s Happening in 2010.
Following that release, Straight Arrows enjoyed a steady washing of positive reviews, with Mess + Noise writing:
Live, Straight Arrows have always hit the rawest nerve in your pleasure centre (wherever that may be) and their long awaited debut It’s Happening does that and very little else. The vocals are reverberated, often-harmonised and distorted into oblivion so you needn’t worry about whatever Owen Penglis and co. are good humouredly singing about, and over the course of this 25-minute record there’s not one song you couldn’t sing along to (and happily mishear the lyrics to) during the first listen – Mess + Noise
These guys play grainy but well-timed punk-garage shit. They’re fun and easy to listen to, with classic pop melodies being used as the foundation to their sound, scuffed up with lo-fi guitars and tonnes of reverb. In July, they released two new, heavier, ear pleasing tracks that are available for download for a measly $2 on their Bandcamp. Can you think of a better way to spend your favourite gold coin?
Catch these guys playing with Violent Soho this October and November. It’s a match made in Australian rebellion heaven.
