Sibilance makes the world go round* sound. It’s contributions to modern-day culture are boundless; it gives Slytherin it’s sinister sound, it makes Sing a Song of Sixpence a memorable nursery rhyme, and it makes Jessica Simpson a terrible name to say if you have a lisp. One particular Sydney trio saw a potential market in this alliteration game and just went full boar with their band name, dropping S’s like it’s nobody’s business. If you don’t have a pronounced lisp, then it’s probably no big deal.
Fuzzed out vocals, psychedelic inspired breakdowns and sweet sing-alongs makes Sydney’s spectacular Silver Statues ever so special!
Hailing from the North Shore of Sydney, Silver Statues are three guys who are probably down to play at your house party if the system is loud enough. These lads and their no frills brand of guitar-driven indie rock have just released their debut studio single, and it’s time for the world to fall in love with Crystal.
Taking instrumental cues from rock revivalists The Strokes, the trio’s debut single Crystal has the kind of indie guitar charm to be the highlight of an up-and-comers band night, or maybe that one track you keep revisiting on your ‘New Syd Music‘ iTunes playlist. Featuring some atypically clean production for this genre, frontman Pete Rowe’s vocals lend, both figuratively and literally, a voice to the music of Silver Statues. While there may be room for Rowe to improve vocally, there’s a real catharsis in hearing his tempered vocals stretch and roar over the band.

Lyrically, this song reminds me ever so slightly of the glory days of glam rock, doting after a girl named Crystal, dropping ‘hallelujah’, and talk of infidelity and unrequited affection – something about these lines feels like a tribute to the roots of rock. Complete with an irrefutably catchy chorus, psychedelic breakdown and fuzzy, indistinct vocal samples during the closing moments, Crystal takes tried-and-true building blocks of popular music throughout history and re-appropriates them to form 3 minutes and 28 seconds of pure, distilled indie rock. For a debut single, Crystal demonstrates startling potential for Silver Statues, and makes these boys a definite act to watch as time goes on.
