Hailing from the beachy southern suburbs of Perth, the young three-piece band, Slick Monks music is best described as a seamless fusion of indie rock and surf, with a touch of grunge thrown into the mix. Their music booms with catchy repetitions of riffs and psychedelic, echoing guitars, mixed with uniquely haunting, deep and clear vocals. Slick Monks began to show astonishing potential with their debut EP Clear Milk and their impressive gig track record, as their music basically begs to be heard live. Considering this, Slick Monks have played many venues around Perth and throughout Western Australia, as well as being selected to perform at the unfortunately cancelled, Southbound this year following the success of their first single, Spaghetti Maze.

Slick Monks liar's mine

Perth is well-established as a veritable talent-making machine, as we know now, and Slick Monks are another young band to add the burgeoning list of great acts to come out of the city.

Lead singer/guitarist Jack Cooper, drummer Jack Ward and bassist Vincent Bochat are the rising talents that started Slick Monks back in the winter of 2014. Although they officially started just over a year ago, they began to meet up collaboratively the year before, jamming through tunes that Jack Cooper had previously written as well as coming up with new material. Cooper reflects, “I come to the jams with the songs in a skeleton form, and then the boys put on the flesh and skin so to speak.”

As the magic began to blossom when they put “all three heads together to write” it seemed logical for them to form Slick Monks and continue creating. When starting the band, their main intention was to “stick together and have the best of fun,” which Cooper expressed genuinely. Their music appears as a prime example of this as it is polished and tied neatly together. This appears as an ode to the band mates keeping close connections, both in the studio and out.

Spaghetti Maze starts simple, but escalates into a rhythmic celebration before zoning into the angst-ridden lyrics and deep echoing vocal. The chorus evolves into intently repetitive melody and lyrics, but is still successfully catchy and pleasing. The tune also conquers acoustically, as performed on Live and Local in Perth. When acoustic it becomes pure in its simplicity, but the vocal by Cooper is more brooding and rough, projected with great passion.

Their new single, Liar’s Mime transcends all previous releases; it appears more refined with strong driving motifs and magnetic qualities. The second verse appears awry as Cooper sings in a distinctively low register, a pastiche of grunge hovering over beachy rock. Slick Monks have been spending this past summer recording Liar’s Mime (and hopefully more) with local genius Rob Grant who’s worked with legends like Tame Impala, Pond and Miley Cyrus in his Poons Head Studio, creating great anticipation around Slick Monks’ future output. Slick Monks are currently on a small tour around WA, if you’re in the area catch it if you can! Meanwhile the rest of us wait…
