Raw and raucous: Introducing Auckland’s Miss June

Having come together in 2013 after frontwoman Annabel Liddel recruited a group of musicians to support her solo performance, Auckland band Miss June have not wasted any time in establishing their unapologetic sound.

It’s raw and raucous; a hard-hitting explosion of fuzzed out punk riffs and wailing vocal melodies.

With their fuzzed-out punk riffs and unapologetic vocal delivery, Auckland four-piece Miss June are an all-out kick to the nose.

With a string of consistently blistering singles under their collective belt, the four-piece belt through an energetic brand of 90’s garage that’ll kick you straight in the nose.

On their most recent single Twitch, the band showcase their penchant for vitriolic delivery. “I wrote Twitch in my first year of clinical placement for Medical School,” Liddel says about the track.

The song is about the first time I operated on a living human being and how different this was to operating on a cadaver. I brought the lyrics and music to the boys and a year later it became the beautiful specimen it is today.”

While the band have spent many nights playing with some of the worlds biggest acts (Foo Fighters, The Jezabels), their music still holds an incredibly charming DIY feel. This is largely a result of their of their recording process.

We write a lot of the music and record it as demos before we hit the studio. For the final tracking we record at The Lab with Tom Healy who is a very close friend of ours.”

“The drum tracking and bass is done in the main room and all other bits in Tom’s personal studio. It becomes very intimate and experimental doing it this way, but ensures that we always have solid rhythm sections.

What emerges from this approach is the signature high-octane Miss June sound we’ve come to adore.

Next month, the band will be returning to Aussie shores for two BIGSOUND performances.

We always have heaps of fun playing in Australia!”

“We have such a great crew of friends and fellow musicians there which makes it a lot of fun and not too different from home.”

It hasn’t been long since we were last treated to music from Miss June, but by the looks of it, we won’t have to wait long for more. The band have another track set for release in the very near future.

This is another single off our debut album Bad Luck Party,” they say of the track.

You’ll have to wait and see but let me tell you it’s a guaranteed banger.”

So keep your eyes peeled… new Miss June will be with you shortly
