Being the daughter of music legend Sting, I imagine, would be pretty difficult*. Being able to bring your dad along to news week and say “My daddy is the lead singer of the Police. His name is Sting…” would be pretty epic! However, when it came to you wanting to branch out as an individual artist, that’s where the greatness of your father could potentially overshadow you. People would have an expectation and assumption that you’d be a great musician. There would be the constant shadow of your parent over you as an artist. Well she threw this expectation to the curb and put her own stamp on the music world. Cue Eliot Sumner!
With a bold post-punk sound and an attitude to match, Eliot Sumner will make you forget all about her famous father**.
Based in London the new wave, indie rock and synth-pop singer released her EP Information in August. Sumner’s EP is fifteen-minutes of edgy post-punk revival that will have you reaching for the volume button to turn those sweet, sweet sounds up louder.
Eliot Sumner started playing and writing music at the young age of fifteen where a lot of her music had a very reggae and pop punk vibe to it. It was then that one of her iconic songs I Blame Coco was written before being released in 2007. It wasn’t until Sumner was seventeen that she signed with the label Island Records for a multi-record deal. From here the twenty-four-year-old has gone on to release her debut album, The Constant that contained less of the reggae she originally inhabited but embraced a more punk rock and electro-pop vibe.
I Followed You Home is Sumner’s most recent single and was released last week. Her voice is really something that is quite mesmerising. She has this ability to have such a deep and powerful voice that is solid and strong. Yet at the same time, she manages to make her voice resonate with a tenderness that compliments the music, as to allow the seamless flow of the two. Whilst I loved her EP Information and her earlier works, I Followed You Home is the panicle of what she has done so far. You can really see her experience and respect for her art within this track and the next enterprise is something I simply can’t wait for!
