Introducing: Elephant Ego

Elephant Ego have a small ego, but their sound is big, the size of well, an elephant for lack of better analogies. Having been on the Melbourne music block since 2012, Ted Mitchell on rhythm guitar and vocals, Zak Degenhardt playing Lead guitar, keys and vocals, Alex Capper on bass and Will Clancy smashing the drums and vocals make the body of the animal size band.

Elephant Ego

Elephant Ego are a complete clusterfuck, and that’s a good thing! Groovy yet moody, this Melbourne outfit will have you stampeding to their next gig.

They best describe their genre as beachy, groovy, brooding, intricate and ‘clusterfuck’, which I have no idea what that means, but I think it’s supposed to be that way. It’s obvious that they strive for having an ambiguous sound, claiming they like when people describe them in different ways.

Here is my turn: Elephant Ego sound like a stampede of jungle animals. They also sound a bit like an older and newer version of The Kooks in some songs, but the Kings of Leon in others. They float between floating guitar sounds to the repeated echo of long and exaggerated single words over good drumming in the background. Lastly, these guys do sound Australian, and that’s something that resonates with chilled out summer backyard parties on a Sunday evening.

At a live gig, Elephant Ego is sure to provide a chilled out vibe, impromptu jams and Melbourne charm. If the Melbourne band scene wasn’t enough, Elephant Ego are influenced by the Perth music scene and bands the likes of: Tame Impala, Pond, The Growl and Mink Mussel Creek.

In 2013, the band issued a late demo to a sold out crowd at their local bar, The Evelyn. During January through to June this year, Elephant Ego recorded at Oaklands Studios and Transient Productions. Recently released on the 16thOctober, their debut EP, Girls Don’t Believe in Flowers is layered by heavy bass, hard hitting melodies and rock and a bit of blues.

Fever, their recent single from the EP showcases their fluid sound and their ability to couple both rock and blues together in just over four minutes.
