Here’s the playlist Haruki Murakami spun when he DJ’d on Tokyo FM one night

It’s no secret that Haruki Murakami is a huge music fan. Music plays an integral role in most of his narratives, with references to jazz, classical and 60s pop laced through his novels (he even named one book after The BeatlesNorwegian Wood).

The celebrated Japanese writer personally owns a huge record collection containing around 10,000 LPs (someone even made a 3,350-song Spotify playlist inspired by it), which you can explore via his interactive website.

One might wonder then, what would he play if he were given a DJ spot on a radio show?

Recently Murakami was the host of a Tokyo FM show called Murakami Radio. Taking to the DJ seat, he played 55-minutes of some of his favourite tunes. And in case you missed it, you can now listen to all his selections in a Youtube Playlist put together by The Vinyl Factory.

“It has been my hobby to collect records and CDs since my childhood, and thanks to that, my house is inundated with such things,” wrote Murakami in a message posted by Tokyo FM. “However, I have often felt a sense of guilt toward the world while listening to such amazing music and having a good time alone. I thought it may be good to share such good times with other people while chatting over a glass of wine or a cup of coffee.”

The playlist features tracks by everyone from The Beach Boys to George Harrison to Joey Ramone. Listen below.
