The perfect opportunity to cap off a massive summer is right around the corner! St Kilda Festival, now in its 39th year, is Australia’s largest free live music festival, with massive crowds of 400,000 people predicted on the day.
To celebrate such a monumental feat, the team behind the event have gifted fans their most insane program to date. St Kilda Festival will present not only an incredible live music lineup but will see dance performances and workshops, carnival rides, the Victorian Beach Volleyball Championships, BMX and skate, plus food and market stalls and special events hosted by local bars and restaurants.
The City of Port Phillip is bracing itself for its biggest weekend of the year, with the annual St Kilda Festival right around the corner.
Here’s what you need to know about St Kilda Festival 2019.
Festival Etiquette
St Kilda is not only home to the festival, but hundreds of local residents and businesses. Festival organisers are asking that punters be responsible and respectful. You can read up on your festival etiquette on the St Kilda Festival website, but to paraphrase…
The festival is a dry zone (no alcohol outside of licensed areas, no BYO, no open vessels), no smoking within ten metres of food vendors or on St Kilda Beach, no glass is permitted in any areas on the day, parking will be heavily restricted and traffic monitored, plus there’ll be extra bins for people to dispose of their garbage and recycling thoughtfully.
Dogs (and other animals)
Fear not, dog mums and dads; you won’t have to leave your furry four-legged friends at home. Dogs (and cats, cows, birds, llamas, guinea pigs, whatever) are allowed into the festival grounds, but just remember to tread carefully as the festival can get particularly loud and overwhelming for animals (and people, too), especially later on in the day.
If you do end up bringing your pooch for a good time, why not head down to the Amazing Greys tent in Catani Gardens for puppy treats and a pop-up photo studio for dogs.
Age Restrictions
Or lack thereof! St Kilda Festival is an all ages event! Excluding licensed areas and venues, all areas of the festival are open to all ages including stages.
Transport
Because the St Kilda Festival attracts such healthy crowds year after year, road closures are in place on the day of the event, and delays can be expected on surrounding roads. The City of Port Phillip council have accounted for the masses, though, and heaps of public transport options to St Kilda have been put in place for the day. Trams will run from Southern Cross, Flinders Street and Melbourne Central stations, the Sandringham train line will take you straight to St Kilda and a bunch of extra bus routes will get you to the festival, too.

Food and Drinks
St Kilda Festival will welcome over 100 food trucks and stalls to the festival precinct to keep over 400,000 mouths happy. Fitzroy and Acland Streets come alive on the festival day, too, with a lot of local venues hosting special events plus food and beverage specials.
The Music
The best thing about the St Kilda Festival is that there’s so much diversity that there’ll be something tailored to everybody’s music taste. Sprawled across seven stages, free live music will be happening between 10 am and 1 pm, with the likes of DZ Deathrays, The Preatures and Mojo Juju entertaining the masses of crowds.
